  • A report jointly strung together by the Association for Sustainability and Democracy (ALDA) in Iceland and the UK think tank, Autonomy is yet another piece of evidence that suggests a rethink of our work culture may yield greater gains than expected
  • In essence, workers shifted from a 40-hour workweek to a 35-hour or 36- hour work with no reduction in pay

cricket-ind-vs-eng-test,In most parts of the world, the 40-hour workweek has largely become enshrined into the social fabric. What this typically amounts to is employees toiling away for eight hours a day, five days a week.

Between 2015 and 2019, Iceland carried out what amounted to the world's largest trial of a shorter working week, the results of which, perhaps, may not surprise all that many. ,cricket-live-score-app-for-android

Iceland's social experiment comprised two separate trials, one carried out by the Reykjavik City Council and the other by the Icelandic government. The first involved more than 2,500 people while the latter included 440, making up over one per cent of the country's working population. ,basketball-ball-vs-netball-ball

In essence, workers shifted from a 40-hour workweek to a 35-hour or 36- hour work with no reduction in pay. What's more, the trials weren't exclusive to a single industry with a wide network of workplaces involved from hospitals to offices to preschools and social service providers. There was also no standardised template for working hours either, with several workers taking on non-traditional shifts.

Despite all the complexities involved in the trials, the results were clear for all to see. In some cases, productivity remained unchanged, and in others, it actually increased. Employee happiness also rose, while stress and burnout fell. Overall, work-life balance increased as individuals found more time to tend to their domestic lives and devote to their hobbies and families. ,basketball-newspaper-articles

molten-bg3200-basketball-review,“The study shows that the world's largest-ever trial of a shorter working week in the public sector was by all measures an overwhelming success,” said Will Stronge, Autonomy's director of research. “It shows that the public sector is ripe for being a pioneer of shorter working weeks – and lessons can be learned for other governments.”

volleyball-pronunciation-dictionary,Workplaces used a process of trial and error to identify individual strategies that worked best for them. In many cases, this involved increased delegation and reprioritisation of tasks. Notably, meetings were more focused and shorter, and if one wasn't needed, it wasn't carried out.

volleyball-drills-to-improve-digging,The results of the trial have, reportedly, allowed Iceland's trade unions to negotiate better working hours for tens of thousands across the workforce. Around 86 per cent of Iceland's workforce now benefits from reduced work hours or, at least, the option of a shorter workweek.

It's worth noting that, while this is the largest and longest such trial conducted, it is far from the first. The report's publication, in fact, arrives on the heels of the Japanese government proposing a shorter workweek in its latest annual economic policy guidelines, bolstered by the success of a trial carried out by Microsoft in August 2019 among its 2,300-strong workforce in Japan. ,best-american-football-betting-apps
